Job Description

The GIS Intern position is a summer intern opportunity for an individual interested in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within the realm of Public Works. The GIS Intern will gain hands on, practical application experience in reviewing spatial data in the office and collecting data in the field. They will work primarily with the Asset Management team in the Public Works Department in managing spatial data for transportation, sewer, stormwater, and grounds maintenance features. This position may also work on other city GIS projects and utilize ESRI ArcGIS platforms with the GIS team in the city’s Information Technology Department This is a great way to learn about municipal work, get to know our Littleton team, and make connections for future opportunities. Starting pay range $21.28 - $23.52 per hour This temporary intern position is non-exempt per FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Work Schedule: The typical schedule would be 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, with a half hour lunch; however, the schedule can be flexible. This temporary intern position is typically a summer position but may be extended longer with part-time hours depending on intern availability and department needs. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reviews existing inventory and datasets for the Public Works Department to determine necessary updates and/or to replace with new data. Creates static maps and/or mapping applications for various internal requests. Works in the field to collect data and photographs using GPS equipment, GIS applications (ESRI, ArcGIS) and/or the asset management application. Performs Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) procedures to ensure all collected data are accurate. May work on other city GIS related projects, if interest and time allows. Other related duties and tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent (or will have by the start of the summer); and College course work in GIS, Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, or a similar field preferred; or An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered. Must have a valid driver’s license. Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check and motor vehicle records check, drug screen and physical.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems, and basic experience with ArcGIS Pro and ESRI applications. Basic understanding of GIS principles and spatial reference. Basic photography skills with ability to edit and resize digital photos. Strong technology skills and ability to learn and utilize new systems. Strong attention to detail and ability to review data for accuracy. Ability to communicate effectively and develop cooperative working relationships. Interpersonal skills and ability to both independently and as part of a team.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

Work is performed both indoors in a public building environment and outdoors on public grounds and right-of-way. Long periods of sitting, standing or walking may be required. Physical activities include occasions lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance. Requires ability to sit, stand, operate a vehicle, walk and tolerate extreme weather conditions and temperatures.
