The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. Its why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. Its why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And its why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that its worth paying for.
The Daily is consistently ranked the top daily news podcast in the country. The show works in collaboration with journalists across the New York Times, and, every episode, brings listeners a single story with nuance, depth and context. Our format is flexible. We prominently feature produced interviews with New York Times journalists, but we also interview people living through news events and we use the tools of narrative audio to make our stories compelling and immersive. Whatever form an episode takes, we seek to tell the story of the moment we are in, and to do so in service of truth and understanding. We are searching for a producer to join our team.
Strong candidates will have solid experience in audio production preferably with experience in longform audio. They will have experience structuring, guiding and cutting host?guest interviews. The ability to structure audio around plot and ideas is crucial. So is the ability to live?produce live recording sessions and interviews knowing what tape you will need, cutting the tape in your head, and actively directing your host so that they, and the show, sound their best.
We also look for candidates who understand how to work with scene tape, archival tape, and who know how to score conversations with music. They will be expected to pitch show ideas that use Times journalism as the backbone, as well as audio?centered original ideas that leverage our symbiotic relationship with the larger newsroom. Thoughtful news sensibilities are important. Ultimately, the best candidates are those who are eager to dive in on a daily news show that both reacts to the news and elevates the public conversation.
This is an in?office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.
This role reports to the shows executive producer.
