This role is part of the Slack/Datastores/Core Infrastructure context, focusing on building and operating a scalable database platform and associated tooling. About Slack / Core Infrastructure (context) Slack enables people around the world to communicate and collaborate. Our team operates at tremendous scale, maintaining and building lower levels of the stack, including edge services, data stores and caches, real-time messaging, and asynchronous background job processing. We aim for systems that are highly performant, reliable, and scalable, so users rarely notice us. Key scale indicators include billions of messages, tens of millions of daily users, and hundreds of billions of database queries per day. Responsibilities Operate and enhance large, highly-available database infrastructure using MySQL and Vitess. Develop tools to enable self-service and self-managing capabilities for the database infrastructure to support rapid feature development for customers. Collaborate with engineering teams on database storage needs and advise throughout the development lifecycle. Write code to capture database performance and create tools/dashboards to provide actionable insights. Participate in on-call rotation and work with the operations team to triage and resolve production issues. Support FedRAMP and DoD SRG activities where applicable. Qualifications Have a related technical degree. Have 5+ years of experience in data storage, core infrastructure, or distributed system-owning teams with increasing responsibilities. Professional experience with Go, PHP/Hacklang, Python, Ruby, or Java. Ability to write clear, maintainable code and collaborate to integrate new features or self-service capabilities. Experience operating at least one distributed system at scale (e.g., relational databases like MySQL/Postgres, Kafka, Cassandra, ElasticSearch). Experience deploying and operating server software on Linux at scale, with debugging and performance optimization. Experience operating cloud infrastructure, especially AWS. Familiarity with deployment automation/configuration tools (Chef, Terraform, Ansible, Puppet). Strong communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical concepts to diverse audiences. Some roles may include incentive compensation, equity, and benefits.
