Job Description

The Opportunity

The Performing Arts Department at The Episcopal Academy seeks a full-time Theater Director & Technical Theater Manager to oversee and support theater productions and events across the entire school. This position plays a vital role in the creative and technical execution of performances and events, ensuring excellence in design, safety, and student engagement from Lower through Upper School.

This is a full-time, 10-month position that begins in August 2025.

Who You Are

A creative problem-solver and collaborative teammate, you bring strong organizational and technical skills to the work of school theater production. You're energized by the opportunity to shape student experiences both behind the scenes, on stage, and in the classroom. You thrive in a dynamic environment and find joy in the intersection of artistry, logistics, and mentorship. You also possess:

  • Extensive knowledge of theatrical design and production (sets, lighting, sound, props, rigging, etc.)
  • Experience working with students in educational or youth theater settings
  • Ability to manage complex project timelines and coordinate with multiple stakeholders
  • A commitment to fostering inclusive and student-centered learning environments
  • Confidence using and maintaining theater equipment, tools, and technology
  • A safety-first mindset, particularly in scene shop and performance environments

What You'll Do

You will take the lead on the technical and production elements of Episcopal's annual theater productions and manage all aspects of the school's two performance spaces. You'll supervise and mentor student technicians, teach middle school theater electives in the 2025-2026 school year, and support a wide range of school events. Looking ahead, whether in full courses or trimester based electives, teaching is preferred, though it is not required.

Key responsibilities include:

Manage Theater Spaces (Ridgway Blackbox & Carrafiell Family Theater)

  • Schedule, prepare, and run events such as concerts, speakers, and admissions programs
  • Oversee box office and ticketing for all productions
  • Maintain theater technology and equipment; coordinate service and upgrades
  • Supervise part-time and freelance staff (e.g., sound engineer, production assistants)
  • Support Artsfest and end-of-year theater cleanup/storage

Lead and Support Productions (Lower, Middle, and Upper School)

  • Provide lighting, scenic, and props design and construction for major productions (e.g., musicals, plays, dance concert)
  • Coordinate rehearsal schedules and production timelines with directors
  • Lead technical rehearsals and weekend "work calls" with student technicians
  • Serve as production manager during tech and performance weeks
  • Coordinate orchestra and sound setup with external engineers
  • Organize and lead post-production strike

Afternoon Technical Theater Program

  • Supervise and mentor student technicians across divisions as they build and design productions
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organized scene shop
  • Support student learning and growth through coaching and hands-on experience
  • Afternoon and weekend commitment during production seasons

Teach Middle School Theater Electives (2025-2026)

  • Design and lead trimester-long E-block electives such as:
    • Tech Olympics
    • Theatrical Design

Other Responsibilities

  • Serve as school mentor for the Cappies program, including attending two local productions per year
  • Participate in regular Performing Arts Department meetings and full-faculty meetings

To Apply

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, resume, and list of three references. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
