Required Skills: - Gastroenterologists should have an extensive knowledge of the upper and lower gastric tract; they must have experience using upper and lower endoscopy device, PEGs, and dilation equipment; and complete knowledge of gastrointestinal diseases and conditions.
- Diagnosing and treating GI disorders including Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, motility disorders, cirrhosis, and other digestive diseases
- Performing procedures such as: colonoscopy, upper GI endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, capsule endoscopy to examine the small intestine, anorectal and esophageal manometry, PEG/feeding tube placement, endoscopic treatment of Barrett's esophagus, polypectomy, and more
- Prescribing medications to treat digestive disorder
- Participating in continuing education activities to maintain professional certification
- Referring patients to specialists if further diagnostic testing or treatment is needed
