Overview Editor in Chief, Federal News job at Tax Analysts. Falls Church, VA. Summary SUMMARY: Plans, edits, and has overall responsibility for Tax Notes Today Federal. Reads and evaluates news stories submitted for publication. Provides guidance and editorial direction to the staff, including setting news coverage priorities. Maintains contacts with government officials and acts as liaison with sales and marketing to assist in advertising efforts. May write as needed and may conduct weekly editorial meetings. Responsibilities Identifies newsworthy tax-related developments that deserve coverage for an audience of tax professionals. Monitors and manages writing assignments, and edits news articles and special reports. Plans each issue and coordinates the flow of copy. Communicates clearly and consistently with reporters and editors. Resolves problems, sets schedules, and maintains high standards for news quality. Has an understanding of tax law basics and terminology, as well as a thorough understanding of congressional and regulatory procedures. Edits for substance, style, and accuracy, conducts research as needed, and ensures proper style, according to established policies and procedures. Responsible for long-range planning, including assessing needs for graphics and other resources to complete assignments. Participates in company-sponsored conferences, roundtable discussions, etc. Adheres to company style guide and established publication deadlines. Supervises subordinate staff, including hiring, recommending raises, disciplinary actions, and termination. Knowledge & Skills Demonstrated strong knowledge of writing and editing concepts and principles. Must be able to evaluate content for grammar, clarity, and coherence. Understanding of key principles in tax policy. Ability to write and edit stories on complex topics in a way that is accessible to educated individuals who are not experts in every field of tax law. Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to manage a large team. Ability to work under deadline pressure in a fast-paced environment. Requirements College degree in English, journalism, or related field. 10 years+ of experience in editing and reporting news stories, preferably for a professional audience. Must display sound judgment and problem-solving skills. Experience in managing and team building.
