Job Description

SUMMARY: The Licensed Practical Nurse, under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager and the general supervision of the Professional, Registered Nurse (RN), assists in caring for patient and/or families with consideration of the aging process throughout the Brown University Health, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. In situations where professional nurses are not employed, the licensed practical nurse functions under the direction of a licensed physician, dentist or podiatrist. Each LPN is responsible for the nursing care rendered. The core Success Factors include: Instill Trust and Value Differences Patient and Community Focus and Collaborate RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for the safe delivery of patient care: Under the supervision of the professional nurse, physician, or Advanced Practice Provider (APP), assists with the assessment of nursing care needs and implementation of the plan of care. Performs selected procedures and treatments according to approved policies and protocols. Facilitates access to care and promotes population health. Facilitate in the transition of care from the hospital or emergency department. Collaborates across disciplines to coordinate patient care. Monitors, records and communicates patient conditions, as appropriate. Effectively delegates patient care to the appropriate support staff, e.g. Medical Assistant, Outpatient Service Rep. Precepts LPNs and medical assistants. Participates in quality improvement projects. Conducts quality assurance audits, as assigned. Inserts intravenous lines to include Intermittent Needle Therapy (INT). Administers medication in accordance with Brown University Health System-Wide Administration of Medications Policy. Suctions patients (naso/pharyngeal and orally). Records selected treatments and procedures for which she/he is responsible. Maintains patient and family confidentiality according to established hospital standards for it. Serves as an active patient/family advocate. Assists with the identification of learning needs and with the development of a plan to meet those needs. Supports and reinforces teaching done by the RN, MD, APP, and/or Pharmacist. Responsible for emergency and safety conduct: Identifies cardiopulmonary arrest and initiates CPR. Demonstrates adherence to universal precautions, safety programs and other infection control measures. Reviews fire, disaster and infection control in manual. Demonstrates ability to perform responsibilities in emergency/code situations. Checks emergency equipment. Reports unsafe situations to the Clinical/Practice Manager. Lifts correctly to avoid harm to self. Utilizes assistive devices when available. Maintains an environment conducive to patient comfort and safety. Exercises proper care in the use of equipment and reports need to repair to the appropriate person. Responsible for Professional Conduct: Engaging in life-long learning to expand capacity of self and others to create and sustain a learning organization and a purposeful manner of behavior. Meets and maintains competency requirements according to the nursing credentialing policy procedures. Maintains a pattern of reliable attendance, punctuality and completion of timely work assignments. Responds willingly to the special needs of the department (i.e. flexibility with time). Utilizes time, equipment, and supplies in a cost-effective manner. Participates in departmental and clinic specific activities including meetings and projects such as Quality Assurance and Improvement. Participates in the orientation of all team members. Participates in appropriate staff education programs to maintain and expand job knowledge and skills. Establishes annual developmental goals in collaboration with Clinical Manager. Utilizes appropriate resources in administering care to patient and families. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Must have current licensure to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Rhode Island. Successful completion of the hospital's patient care delivery orientation program, which includes entry level credentialing of selected skills. Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS). Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. EXPERIENCE: Two years medical/surgical nursing experience is preferred. Pediatric experience highly preferred in Pediatric Ambulatory settings. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical ability for extensive walking and standing; lifting, positioning, and assisting patients with ambulatory needs, as necessary.

Pay Range:  

$23.81-$37.85
